March’s sale offered up a compelling variety of spirits for collectors of all stripes. There were vintage malts, limited editions, single cask releases, iconic collections and much more.

Following our post sale offers period, a few more bottles of fine scotch are heading off to new owners including this iconic Macallan Private Eye, sold for £2,200, while a miniature of the same bottle fetched £200.
A Rosebank 1981 22 Year Old from the ever popular Rare Malts Series sold for £625 and a pair of Springbank 1992 27 Year Old private single casks were also snapped up for £400 each.
Bottled exclusively for the Craigellachie Hotel, a prime spot for whisky enthusiasts to base themselves for exploring the delights of Speyside, this Craigellachie 21 Year Old received an offer of £725. One of only 510 bottles released at a cask strength of 57.2%.
A Hibiki 21 Year Old bottled to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Suntory was sold for £1,900.
Top Lots
It was collectors favourite Karuizawa that topped this month’s auction, with a bottle of 1984 34 Year Old Noh Cask 3032 from the closed distillery achieving a hammer price of £4,900. Following close behind was a bottle from the same series, a 1981 31 Year Old Noh Cask 348, sold for £4,000.
Macallan was represented in the top 5 by the recent Paris Edition release of the Macallan El Cellar De Can Roca Distil Your World created in collaboration with Michelin starred chefs the Roca brothers. The bottle ended the auction on a winning bid of £3,800.
1960s Malts
Revered as a golden era for Scotch among many whisky afficionados, there were a variety of tantalising 60s malts to bid on in the sale.
A Springbank 1969 34 Year Old single cask bottling from Signatory Vintage fetched £1,500, while a Springbank 1965 27 Year Old bottled to commemorate The Everest Challenge sold for £1,100.
From the Scotch Malt Whisky Society there was a bottle of Glenugie 1965 32 Year Old bottled at 56.6% fetching £975 and a Platinum Selection bottling of Inchgower 1965 38 Year Old from Douglas Laing sold for £950.
Other Speysiders included a Glen Grant 1964 25 Year Old single cask bottling from Signatory Vintage (£850), a Macallan 1965 25 Year Old Anniversary Malt (£2,600) and a Macallan 1967 Speymalt (£1,600).
Islay
The iconic whisky producing island was impressively represented in the March sale with some stunning bottles available.
Keeping up the 1960s theme, there was this Caol Ila 1969 16 Year Old Connoisseur’s Choice bottling from Gordon & MacPhail that achieved a hammer price of £650.
Port Ellen offered up two bottles from the Special Releases series. This 1978 27 Year Old 6th release (£1,350) and the 1979 28 Year Old 7th release (£1,250). There was also a Port Ellen 1978 30 Year Old from Douglas Laing’s Old & Rare Platinum Selection (£925) in addition to a pair of single cask bottlings from the Dormant Distillery Company. A 1982 malt from cask 1144 (£625), distilled shortly before the distillery closed, and a 1982 25 Year Old from cask 2556 (£550).
Bowmore was represented by the instantly recogniseable Bowmore Bicentenary bottle. The highest achiever in the Islay section fetching £1,500 at the end of the sale.
There were mature malts from other Islay favourites such as this Lagavulin 25 Year Old (£950) bottled for the distillery’s 200th anniversary, and from Diageo’s Special Releases, a Caol Ila 1982 35 Year Old (£825) and 30 Year Old (£575). Top seller from Laphroaig was a 33 Year Old Donald Johnston (£600), the first release in the Strong Characters series.
Cognac
There were some fantastic Cognac lots on offer led by this complete eight bottle set of the iconic Courvoisier Collection Erte. After a competitive evening of bidding this ended on a hammer price of £3,000.
This eye-catching Frapin Cuvee 1888 Decanter with its decorative spiral of 24 carat gold, sold for £2,500.
Other auction regulars included various editions of Richard Hennessy, Hennessy Paradis Imperial and Remy Martin Louis XIII decanters.
A Hennessy Cuvee Bicentenaire, bottled to celebrate the 200th anniversary of US independence fetched £260.
Liqueurs
Top liqueur lot was once again taken by a vintage Chartreuse, this time a Chartreuse Green dating from the 1940s that sold for £1700 after some late competitive bidding.
Bitters were achieving some impressive prices with vintage bottles from the mid-20th century taking the bulk of the higher hammer prices. This Scarpa Turin Milan dating from the 1950s fetched £400, while a Barbieri Bitter and Campari Bitter, both bottled in the 1960s fetched £270 apiece.
Other liqueurs performing well included these 1950s bottles of Alpes Camomila (£210), Magnoberto Elixir Rabarbaro (£210), Benedictine DOM (£180) and Picon Amer (£160). Going further back, this Pimm’s No.1 Cup from the 1930s-40s fetched £190.
Miniatures
Eagle eyed bidders may have noticed that we have now integrated some miniature bottles into the monthly spirits auction. Their small stature didn’t stop some achieving impressive prices.
A 5cl of Bushmills 46 Year Old sold for £250, while a miniature Laphroaig 1967 28 Year Old from Signatory Vintage and a Macallan 1974 18 Year Old each sold for £180.
The highest price achieved by a miniature lot went to a 48 bottle case of Yamazaki 12 Year Old that fetched £410.
Roundup
A Royal Navy Rum Flagon dating from the 1940s, immaculately preserved in its wicker basket complete with the original handwritten tag, sold for £2,200.
A pair of Michter’s whiskeys topped our US category this month with a 25 Year Old Bourbon from the 2017 limited release fetching £4,400 and a 20 Year Old bottled in 2018 selling for £2,300.
