We kicked off 2026 with another auction filled with stunning malts, blends and spirits, so read on to find out what caught our eye in the first auction of the year. Discover a handful of highlights from the January Whisky and Spirits auction results.
*Aftersales Update*
There was some shuffling among the top lots at the conclusion of our aftersales process with a trio of Macallan budging their way into the top ten. This Macallan 1950 Handwritten Label was sold after an offer of £4,800 was accepted, bumping it into 2nd place. A Macallan 1980 18 Year Old Gran Reserva (£2,900) and a Macallan 1974 25 Year Old Anniversary Malt (£2,400) were the aforementioned other interlopers into the top ten.
This stunning Macallan Master of Photography Mario Testino set, including a print, also found a new owner with a bid of £1,950, while an eye-catching Hibiki 21 Year Old in an Arita decanter sold for £2,100.
Top Lots
There was an eclectic mix of bottles among the top lots in the auction with the usual generous helping of auction favourite Macallan alongside several tantalising highland malts and a selection of world whiskies from Japan, Ireland and the United States.
The first bottle of the year to top an auction was not a scotch, and the honour was taken by this Yamazaki 1993 Private Cask bottled in 2012 for La Maison du Whisky. Matured in a single sherry butt and bottled at a healthy 57.5%, the winning bid was £10,000 after some spirited late bidding.
Ever present in the upper echelons of the auction, January was no different for Macallan with plenty of releases to choose from. This Macallan 2008 El Cellar de Can Roca Distil Your World London Edition, produced for the London on-trade, fetched £3,700, while a Macallan 30 Year Old Sherry Oak in the old style, eye-catching blue label sold for £4,600, an impressive uptick in price compared with recent auction results.
Scotch Whisky
Another auction favourite is Campbeltown stalwart Springbank and this auction offered up some enticing bottles. A Springbank 12 Year Old 100 Proof dating from the 1990s saw healthy competition and ended on £2,100, while an earlier 1980s bottling of Springbank 21 Year Old sold for £1,050, and a Springbank 24 Year Old Single Cask bottled in 2019 fetched a hammer price of £1,100.
From Islay there were mature malts such as this Bowmore 27 Year Old from the Timeless Series (£1,100) and a Port Askaig 45 Year Old (£800) that performed well, however the surprise result of the night went to this Bruichladdich 1991 14 Year Old WMD II The Yellow Submarine that sunk all previous auction sales to set a new auction record of £800.
Highland malts were led by a Glendronach 1971 40 Year Old single cask that sold for £2,200. A Glen Garioch 1974 18 Year Old released as part of Cadenhead’s 150th anniversary range fetched £1,550 and a Dalmore 1973 matured in a Cabernet Sauvignon wine cask settled on £1,800.
Other Spirits
Outside of whisky, there were strong results for this Remy Martin Louis XIII 2023 release that fetched a hammer price of £1,550. Some other Cognacs saw competitive bidding towards the end of the auction and one of the longest battles of the evening was for this Martell 3 Star VOP, with original box, from the 1970s that eventually ended on £420.
Another competitor for the longest bidding battle came from the rum category with this Bacardi Licor Superior, after some time, settling on a hammer price of £360.
For those looking for a showpiece for their bar, an elaborate Faberge Arts Applied Craft Imperial Vodka decanter encased in an emerald Faberge Egg attracted the attention of bidders and sold for £575.
Liqueurs
Vintage Campari Bitter continues to fetch competitive prices with this 1950s litre bottle reaching £310.
A 50cl of Chartreuse VEP 1975 sold for £725 while a Chartreuse Yellow dating from the 1950s-60s fetched £525
There were a few bottles of Grand Marnier that sparked interest with a Cuvee Cent Cinquantenaire ending on £310 and an unusual 1970s tall, flask type bottle of Cordon Jaune selling for £300 . A 1990s bottling of Cherry Marnier also fetched an impressive £150.
Funkiest bottle in the auction went to this Ti-Toki Liqueur (£65) from New Zealand in it’s Tekoteko shaped bottle, an unusual talking point for the winning bidders bottle shelf.
