Here’s a look at a selection of the highlights from our April Whisky & Spirits auction.
*Aftersales Update*
Our previous top bottle of Macallan was usurped in spectacular fashion by a Glenlivet 50 Year Old Heritage from The Twelve Elements Collection at the conclusion of our aftersales process. One of only 12 bottles created for the collection, it fetched a price of £18,200.
Also getting in among the top lots was a bottle of Glenfiddich Ultimate 38 Year Old, sold for £2,400. The beautifully presented crystal decanter with 24 carat gold decoration was released exclusively for the Chinese market.
Less outwardly flashy than the previous two lots but containing some wonderful liquid were these two bottles from the discontinued Rare Malts Selection. A Brora 1977 24 Year Old sold for £900 and a Rosebank 1981 22 Year Old fetched £550.
We also mentioned the strength of the Islay selection in this auction and a few more of these bottles received accepted bids in the aftersale with a Laphroaig 1985 30 Year Old (£550), Port Ellen 1983 27 Year Old Provenance (£400) and Port Ellen 1980 Connoisseurs Choice (£370) finding new owners.
Macallan
Collectors favourite Macallan is never far from the top spots in our monthly sales and this month is no exception with a Macallan 1963 15 Year Old taking the top spot with a hammer price of £7,200. The malt was distilled in 1963 and originally bottled in 1978 after being matured in sherry wood. It was re-bottled in 2009 as part of the Fine & Rare Collection.
A trio of 25 Year Old Anniversary Malts from consecutive years (1965, 1966 & 1967) achieved between £2,000-£2,200 each, while a recently released 2025 entry into the Estate Single Cask series fetched £1,250.
Islay
There was a strong Islay representation in this month’s sale with over 150 bottles of malt from the iconic whisky isle going under the hammer.
Leading these was a bottle of Ardbeg 1976 Single Cask 2391 that achieved a new auction record with an impressive hammer price of £5,400. One of only 497 bottles released, it was matured in a sherry butt and bottled at a warming 56% cask strength.
Distilled in the same year and fetching £1,050 was this bottle of Laphroaig Vintage 1976.
Keeping on the 1970s distillate, there were indie bottlings such as a Port Ellen 1979 31 Year Old from Douglas Laing (£800), an Ardbeg 1974 23 Year Old Signatory Vintage (£410), Port Ellen 1974 G&M Connoisseurs Choice (£350) and a Caol Ila 1979 from Mackillop’s Choice (£250) among others.
For fans of longer matured spirits, some enticing mature malts included this Lagavulin 25 Year Old, released to celebrate the distillery’s 200th anniversary (£1,050), a Laphroaig 30 Year Old (£950), Ardbeg 30 Year Old (£725), and a Bowmore 21 Year Old bottled in the 1990s (£600).
Japan
Leading the way among a wide selection of Japanese malts in the auction was a Yamazaki 1980 The Cask Of Yamazaki, bottled in 2002 from a white oak sherry butt. This settled on a winning bid of £6,000.
The top three Japanese bottles this month were all from Yamazaki, with second and third spots going to a Yamazaki 1986 Suntory Vintage Malt (£1,500) and a Suntory Yamazaki 1993 Owner’s Cask bottled for Liqueur Shop Nagoya (£1,200).
A beautifully labelled Karuizawa 1999-2000 Batch 31 from the 36 Views of Mount Fuji series fetched £1,150.
Scotch Whisky
Other notable bottles of Scotch Whisky in the auction included some delightful malts from the Highlands and Speyside, not to mention Campbeltown.
From Diageo’s Special Releases series there were two bottles of Brora with a 30 Year Old 4th Release fetching £1,350 and a 34 Year Old 16th Release achieving £1,400.
Three Gordon & MacPhail bottlings of Strathisla distilled in the late 1950s to mid-1960s fetched £800-£850 apiece and a Glen Grant 1957 G&M also achieved £800.
From Campbeltown the top prices went to a pair of Springbank, both distilled in 1965. This Springbank 1965 bottled by Murray McDavid sold for £1,300, while a Milroy’s of Soho bottling of Springbank 1965 29 Year Old achieved £975.
The discontinued Rare Malts Selection bottlings always attract attention from collectors and plenty were available to bid on including a Port Ellen 1978 20 Year Old (£800), St Magdalene 1979 19 Year Old (£925), Dallas Dhu 1970 24 Year Old (£400), Glenury Royal 1970 29 Year Old (£370), Glen Ord 1973 23 Year Old (£260) and a Royal Lochnagar 1972 24 Year Old (£240).
Roundup
This Chartreuse Yellow produced in Tarragona and dating from 1912-1913 sold for £1,400 despite missing the labels.
Small bottles achieved some big prices with a miniature bottle of Glenfarclas 1953 Coronation released in 2013 to celebrate the 60th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II’s coronation fetching £750. A 5cl bottle of Glenmorangie A Tale Of Cake, matured in Tokaji dessert wine casks sold for £150.
Large format Cognac bottles were on offer with a striking silver magnum of Hennessy Paradis Rare fetching £1,250 and a 3 litre bottle of Hennessy XO selling for £625.
A plethora of colourful Royal Salute flagons adorned the blended whisky section of the auction fetching prices from £70 up to £575 for this Royal Salute 25 Year Old white flagon produced to celebrate the royal wedding of the Crown Prince of Japan in 1993.
A well-preserved case of Haig’s Gold Label bottled in the 1970s, which should keep one happy vintage blends fan happy for a while, achieved a winning bid of £320.
