Exclusive Tequila Ocho Collection auctioned for charity

The most exciting, one of a kind, Tequila lot to come to our auction yet: Jesse Estes sells his personal Tequila Ocho collection for charity.

Auction live: 5-14 May 2024

Tomas Estes, co-founder of Tequila Ocho, probably did more for the global reputation of Tequila than anyone else has to date. His Mexican restaurant Cafe Pacifico is beloved by Tequila drinkers and Tequila Ocho brought the concept of ‘terroir’ in agave and Tequila to the attention of a worldwide audience.

Now his son and Ocho brand ambassador, Jesse Estes, has kindly donated a large portion of his personal collection showcasing some of Ocho’s best vintage Tequila’s from multiple terroirs, alongside two highly collectible first edition agave books, to be sold in our June auction, to raise funds for Equal Measures.

The lot contains 17 bottles from the Tequila Ocho single estate releases, some of which have been in Jesse’s collection since the brand was founded sixteen years ago. The bottles are vintage, single estate Tequila’s – a combination of Blanco and Reposado. For the full list, see the lot description here.

All proceeds from the sale, including hammer price and buyers commission will go directly to Equal Measures UK – a non-profit organisation dedicated to delivering greater equity in the drinks and hospitality industries. Jesse explains:
“I have a great deal of respect and admiration for all that Equal Measures does for the hospitality industry. As such, I am honoured to be able to support Equal Measures in some small capacity, by donating some of my most prized bottles of Tequila Ocho, some of which have been in my private collection for over 16 years, since we launched the brand.”

Vicky Ilankovan, Executive Director of Equal Measures adds, “This is an incredibly exciting lot to have donated to Equal Measures and one that we know will excite collectors and agave aficionados alike. Tequila Ocho is such a genuine and highly respected brand; we are so grateful to Jesse for donating a large portion of his personal collection and to Whisky.Auction for managing the bidding for us. All the funds raised will go directly back into supporting underrepresented and marginalised hospitality workers in the UK, helping them to achieve their career goals and showing them that they are no longer alone.”

About Equal Measures UK

Over the last few years several exciting lots have been sold through the Whisky.Auction platform, including our 2022 ‘charity bottle of the year’, a Foursquare 15 Year Old bottled for bar leged Sly Augustin.

Equal Measures UK is a non-profit organisation founded by Deano Moncrieffe (owner of Hacha bars and the Mirror Margarita RTD brand) to support marginalised and underrepresented people within the drinks and hospitality industries through Education, Mentorship, Community & Opportunities. The initiative enriches possibilities for those from Black, Asian, and other minority ethnicities, or who have faced systemic barriers to their career progression for other reasons such as gender non-conformity, sexuality, or neurodivergence.

The cornerstone of Equal Measures is one-on-one, six-month-long mentorships with leading figures in hospitality, as well as a program of industry-relevant education (WSET Levels 1, 2 & 3 Spirits, and Personal Licences). We also offer a range of EDI services that deep dive into drinks industry relevant workplace scenarios, inclusive and supportive hiring & management practices, and policy change. Through the Education and Mentorship Project we aim to give participants the tools they need to create and sustain rewarding careers. By challenging existing hiring practices, we hope to build awareness of obstacles faced by marginalised groups, and to collaborate with the drinks and hospitality industries to resolve existing biases.

About Tequila Ocho
Tequila Ocho was born out of a collaboration between Tequila Ambassador Tomas Estes and Carlos Camarena, a third generation tequilero and now master distiller of Tequila Ocho. Made from 100% blue weber agave, it is the first Tequila to explore the notion of “terroir” in the category, designating both the year it was produced and the precise field from which the family grown agaves were sourced. Each batch comes from a different field or rancho contributing distinctive characteristics of that place. The result is a series of incredible, premium tequilas that are snapshots of time and place, which can never be recreated or emulated.
